An Orientation Program for Freshmen

Freshmen are about to start a new chapter in their college life. Transition from high school to college life will be a hard time at the beginning. With the purpose of helping them to adapt to the new life and academic studies of college quickly and avoid losing themselves, our university is planning to organize an orientation program.

The program, which is hold by the student union, will last two weeks. All the new students are required to attend. During this time, many activities will be hold including military training which is a tradition. Also, freshmen are going to take part in some lectures which are about the history of our university, helping them know better about the place where they are going to spend four years. Apart from those activities, we will also organize many interesting activities that can involve both entertainment and study. At the end of this program, we will hold an award party to commend those advanced individual groups. Most of all, they can make many friends during those activities.

Hope all the freshmen can take part in our program actively and I am sure they can find their own way to adapt to the wonderful life of college.

关于回收二手书籍的报告

It is not uncommon that when senior students graduate from university, most of their used books which are still in good condition are probably thrown away. What a great waste it is! In order to avoid this kind of waste and make full use of used books, the Students’ Union of our university has organized the special project of collecting used books on campus. We are pleased that the project has received warm welcome and strong support from the students. All the members of the Students’Union give ours sincere thanks to you.

For nearly two weeks since the start of the project, we have received more than 1000 books and we have classified them carefully according to the subjects. We plan to donate part of these books to our library, and part of them to students in need. We will have a small booth on our campus on Saturday, 18th December, and any students who want some used books can come and select. We are looking forward to your participation and your contribution to the recycling of books.

都江堰( Dujiangyan)坐落在成都平原西部的岷江上，距成都市约50公里，始建于公元前三世纪。它的独特之处在于无需用堤坝调控水流。两千多年来，都江堰一直有效地发挥着防洪与灌溉作用，使成都平原成为旱涝保收的沃士和中国最重要的粮食产地之一。都江堰工程体现了我国人民与自然和谐共存的智慧，是全世界年代最久、仍在使用、无坝控水的水利工程。

Dujiangyan is located on the Minjiang River in the west of Chengdu Plain, about 50km away from Chengdu City. It was built in the third century BC. Its unique feature is that it does not need dams to regulate the flow of water. For more than 2000 years, Dujiangyan has been playing an effective role in flood control and irrigation,making Chengdu Plain a fertile land during drought and flood and one of the most important grain producing areas in China. Dujiangyan project embodies the wisdom of the harmonious coexistence of Chinese people and nature. It is the oldest water conservancy project in the world that is still in use and has no dam to control water.

大运河（Grand Canal）是世界上最长的人工河，北起北京，南至杭州。它是中国历史上最宏伟的工程之一。大运河始建于公元前4世纪，公元13世纪末建成。修建之初是为了运输粮食，后来也用于运输其他商品。大运河沿线区域逐渐发展成为中国的工商业中心。长久以来，大运河对中国的经济发展发挥了重要作用，有力地促进了南北地区之间的人员往来和文化交流。

The Grand Canal is the longest man-made river in the world, running from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south. As one of the most magnificent projects in Chinese history, the Grand Canal was built in the 4th century B.C and completed at the end of the 13th century A.D. In the beginning, it was built to transport food, and later also used to transport other commodities. And the area along the Canal gradually developed into China’s industrial and commercial center. For a long time, the Grand Canal has played an important role in China’s economic development and greatly promoted personnel and cultural exchanges between the North and the South.

坎儿井(Karez) 是新疆干旱地区的一种水利系统，由地下渠道将水井连接而成。该系统将春夏季节渗入(seep into)地下的大量雨水及积雪融水收集起来，通过山体的自然坡度引到地面，用于灌溉农田和满足人们的日常用水需求。坎儿井减少了水在地面的蒸发(evaporation),对地表破坏很小， 因而有效地保护了自然资源与生态环境。坎儿井体现了我国人民与自然和谐共存的智慧，是对人类文明的一大贡献。

The Karez is a water conservancy system in the arid regions of Xinjiang, consisting of underground channels connecting Wells. The system collects a large amount of rain and meltwater of snow that seeps into the ground in spring and summer and leads it to the ground through the natural slope of the mountain. The water (brought to the ground) is used to irrigate farms and meet people’s daily water needs. The Karez reduces evaporation of water at the surface, does little damage to the surface, and thus effectively protects the natural resources and ecological environment. The Karez embodies the wisdom of the harmonious coexistence of the Chinese people and nature, and is a great contribution to human civilization.

To improve the students’learning atmosphere and facilitate their studies, as a college student from this university, I propose that the university and library staff should enhance the service of our library.

Many ways can contribute to this. On the one hand, the book collection in the library is already old and out-of–date. What our university needs to do is to buy more new academic books and journals. This method enables students to keep up with the latest knowledge in all fields. On the other hand, all the readers should be required to strictly abide by library rules and regulations, because only in this way can we create a good learning atmosphere.

Through these measures, I believe, students can definitely benefit a lot from the better library service and enjoy a rich campus life.

A proposal to Student UnionAs we all know, students today are confronted with more and more physical and mental pressure as the pandemic still threatens the health and safety of everyone, so I propose that our Student Union organize more extracurricular activities to enrich students’ campus life and improve the situation.First, we can organize more traditional culture-related activities, such as the calligrapy competition, Chinese ink and wash painting exhibition, concert of traditional musical instruments, Chinese clothing show, etc. With these activities, our tradtional culture gets carried forward and students’ inner world will be enriched.Second, we can hold more sports activities besides those regular sports meets, for example, we can introduce some square dance. A proposal for improving servicesDear school leaders，In order to improve the convenience of medical treatment for students in school, as a sophomore, I propose that the services provided by our school clinic should be improved.The suggested details are as followings. First and foremost, considering the uncertainty about when students will get sick, the school clinic should arrange a 24-hour duty system to ensure that students are provided with treatment at any time. Second, according to some friends, the school hospital lacks some common medicines, so that they have to go to the pharmacy off-campus to buy medicines at higher prices. Therefore, I propose that the school hospital increase the types and quantities of medicines in reserve.I look forward to seeing the school hospital become better and better, providing timely help to students, and sincerely hope my proposal could be adopted.
